RHODE ISLAND LAWYERS - DECOF & DECOF:
On May 1, 1975, Leonard Decof founded his
firm under the name of Leonard Decof, Ltd.
It was the first and only law firm in Rhode
Island dedicated exclusively to litigation
and trial of plaintiffs' cases. In the beginning,
Leonard Decof was its sole member. A graduate
of Yale University and Harvard Law School,
he had decided to make trial advocacy his
life's work. His credo was professionalism,
excellence and integrity. This philosophy
has marked the work of the firm, which has
evolved to the current Decof & Decof.
The firm has grown in 20 years to be nationally
recognized and the largest firm in Rhode
Island devoted solely to the prosecution
and trial of civil actions on behalf of
plaintiffs. It presently numbers 12 lawyers,
with a support staff of 22. Its lawyers
are highly trained, experienced courtroom
specialists, who practice their profession
in the spirit and with the philosophy of
the firm and its founder.
Over
the years, Leonard Decof has become recognized
nationally as one of the country's preeminent
trial lawyers. He has won national recognition
in the courtroom as well as at the lectern.
He has tried in the trial courts and argued
in the appellate courts many cases which
established major precedent. Two examples
are Wilkinson v. Vesey, the seminal medical
malpractice case in Rhode Island, and Williams
v. United States, a seminal case nationally
which established precedent for substantial
damages for the wrongful death of a child.
In the United States Supreme Court he has
argued and won cases which set the precedent
in the areas of antitrust and constitutional
law.
